The best of Bilbao. The museum that placed Bilbao on the map. The catalyst that sparked the change that Bilbao went through. Please join me for a little trip to: The Guggenheim in Bilbao

There are currently only 3 Guggenheim museums in the world, in Venice, in New York and in Bilbao. The museum exhibits modern and contemporary art and is designed by architect Frank Gehry. Finished in 1997, it is the beating heart of touristic Bilbao. Strolling alongside the river is already a pleasure, as you can enjoy the building itself and some of its art pieces:

  • The colourful Puppy by Jeff Koons. Legend has it that it was meant to be temporary displayed, but public enthusiasm made it stay permanently. Consisting of 37.000 plants changed twice a year, it is the favourite dog and art piece for many Bilbaínos.
  • And Mamá by Louise Bourgeois. A giant mother spider protecting the eggs she carries.

Inside the museum, the exhibitions change every half a year, but part of the art pieces are permanent. One of the most impacting art pieces of the permanent exhibition is the The Matter of Time by Richard Serra. A massive installation of torqued steel ellipses which create different visual perceptions for the visitor who surrounds or walks through it. It impacts your senses of space and movement at the same time.

A great part of the exhibition is, of course, temporary. Personally, I`ve been able to visit the arts of Kandinsky and Olafur Eliasson which both have struck me pleasantly.

Last but certainly not least, on the third floor more permanent art is displayed, with works of Eduardo Chillida and Andy Warhol amongst others.

By now, I hope you gained the same enthusiasm for the museum as I have. If you can’t wait to go, I understand. But meanwhile, please enjoy a small video I made of my experience in the museum:
